At JAIMS, microscopy is a huge part of what we do every day. We get to work with technology capable of revealing incredible details that are completely invisible to the naked eye.
But it got us thinking:
How do we encourage that same curiosity in the next generation?
That idea led to JAIMS Explorer.
We wanted to create something completely free of charge, simple to access and fun for young children without needing to buy a microscope, download an app or create an account.
JAIMS Explorer uses the camera already built into your mobile phone or tablet and turns it into a simple digital exploration tool. Children can zoom in on everyday objects, capture their discoveries and work through a series of Explorer Missions designed to encourage them to look more closely at the world around them.
A leaf. A feather. A coin. A piece of fabric. A grain of salt.
Things we see every day become surprisingly interesting when you start looking closer.
For children who want a little more of a challenge, we also created Investigator Missions, encouraging them to compare objects, make predictions, experiment with lighting and think about why they are seeing what they see.
The idea isn't to replace a real microscope. It's to provide an accessible first step into microscopy, observation and scientific thinking using technology families already have.
Research into mobile and smartphone microscopy has previously demonstrated its potential as an accessible educational and public-engagement tool, including encouraging young people to investigate and discuss what they're observing.
And importantly, JAIMS Explorer is free.
No specialist equipment. No subscription. No app download.
Just grab a phone, head into the garden or look around the house and start exploring.
Our hope is that one small discovery leads to another question, another investigation and perhaps, for some children, a lifelong interest in science, engineering and the microscopic world.
